Matrix homeserver on a VPS

Synapse, Dendrite or Conduit. You point DNS. We rent the VM.

BitCloudVPS mail and Matrix abstract: envelope and chat glass
Short answer

Install Synapse from Element's docs, publish federation on your domain, and size RAM by rooms and media.

What people actually run

Synapse installation plus Element is the common pair. Matrix: self-hosting explains federation. We do not host your .well-known.

Business $24/mo (6 vCPU / 16 GB DDR5) is the production size. Crypto invoice, no KYC.

From invoice to federation
  1. Start on Business. Move up when Postgres and media grow.
  2. Install from Synapse installation. Serve federation on your domain.
  3. Switzerland for process. Iceland for speech. Amsterdam for EU users.

Limits

Legal rooms only.

Synapse RAM math: rooms, media, and federation cost

Synapse's appetite scales with joined rooms and media, not with user count on the signup page. A personal homeserver for a handful of accounts on a few rooms idles under 1 GB and fits Starter $8.50/mo (4 GB ECC, 60 GB NVMe) — until it joins large federated rooms, where state resolution pushes past 4 GB at peak. A community server with its own media store wants Plus $13.50 (8 GB) as the honest floor and Business — $30 list, $24 yearly, 16 GB DDR5, 240 GB NVMe — when media retention is long. Postgres belongs on NVMe on every plan, and the /64 IPv6 block helps federation reach v6-only peers. Dendrite or Conduit cut the RAM bill if your usage is light. Backups are your job: the media store and the database are the homeserver — losing them loses rooms. No KYC, 19-coin checkout, deploy about a minute. Deploy in 60 seconds

Federation plumbing the host does and does not provide

What the rack provides: a stable IPv4 plus /64 IPv6, unmetered 1-10 Gbps ports, included L3/L4 DDoS, and any location from 21 — Frankfurt on DE-CIX for EU rooms, Singapore on SGIX for APAC. What you provide: DNS (.well-known delegation on your domain), TLS certificates, and the Synapse install from Element's documented packages — BitCloudVPS does not host your .well-known or manage the process. Port-wise, federation is 8448 plus whatever client port you terminate; open them yourself in the firewall. Honest limits: the AUP applies to room content you host, so illegal rooms end the same as any other abuse, and an ignore-list for nuisance servers is your config, not a ticket. Payment settles in BTC, XMR or USDT on seven networks, no KYC, and the yearly term takes 20% off a Business bill that a homeserver will be paying for years.

Where the limits are (October 2026)

Keep the threat model precise. Anonymous-adjacent hosting removes the host-side identity trail: token-only signup, optional email, no KYC review, crypto invoices that record a txid rather than a name. It does not blind the host to traffic it must carry, it does not make a logged-in panel session anonymous, and it does not protect workloads that identify themselves — an admin login from your home IP defeats the whole design. Exact limits of no-KYC anonymity. OPSEC guide. Full checklist. Payment-side note: chain analysis happens on public blockchains, not at the host. Coin choice and network choice are your OPSEC knobs, and the checkout keeps 19 of them open.

Do you manage Synapse?

No.

Federation ports?

You open what the software needs.

How much RAM for Synapse in a mid-sized community?

Count 8 GB as the floor once the server joins busy federated rooms and stores its own media — Plus $13.50 covers it, Business ($30 list / $24 yearly) removes the ceiling. Dendrite or Conduit fit smaller communities into 4 GB on Starter.

Do I need to open port 8448 for federation?

Yes — federation arrives on 8448 (or your delegated port via .well-known), and opening it is your firewall change, not a support ticket. Client traffic usually terminates on 443 with your own TLS. Both ports ride unmetered uplinks on every plan.

Can the homeserver pay in Monero?

Yes. XMR is one of 19 checkout assets alongside BTC and USDT on seven networks. No KYC at signup, email optional — a Matrix homeserver is an ordinary allowed workload on every plan and in all 21 locations.

How much does hosting a Synapse homeserver cost?

A personal homeserver fits the $8.50 Starter (2 vCPU EPYC 7443P, 4 GB ECC, 60 GB NVMe); a busy federated server with media repository grows comfortably into Plus at $13.50 or Business at $30. Federation traffic rides the unmetered 1-10 Gbps port, so no per-gigabyte surprises.

What does the host actually know about me?

Whatever you hand over: a signup token, an optional email address, the invoice you paid and the service traffic. No ID documents, no phone number, no KYC step exists to hand anything else over.

What won't an anonymous VPS protect against?

Self-inflicted links: personal logins from a home IP, leaked cookies, services that publish your address, and on-chain patterns that tie wallets together. The server removes one identifier; it does not fix operational mistakes.
